A room of her own

At two years old, our kid finally has a room. Blame it on the cosleeping and the ever-constant home renovation, but her mattress has laid in the nook outside our bedroom door for the past year. No longer, my friends. Witness:

Everything cute that you see here was my husband's concept, design, and work. Except that tree. I dreamt it and painted it, with guidance from our daughter about leaf placement. I had almost forgotten how fun painting is. That sweet little houses quilt is from my grandma. Shown in full here.

My handyman-by-night husband turned the closet into a little private nook/pillow playhouse. He also made a cubbyhole over the drawers.

He even found an old window, secured it in plexiglass, and trimmed the whole house out to look cuter than anything I've ever seen. I mean, real doorknobs for goodness sakes!

The attic access door was turned into a chalkboard, a decision that we regretted immediately. Only first time parents make these kinds of mistakes. Most days I keep the chalk out of reach in the cubbyhole.

The kid loves it. It took three times longer than we thought (doesn't everything?), but, for a while at least, we've shed our "slacker parents" vibe. Yee haw! We just had our first weekend not working on this project, and it meant more sewing time for me! A wonderful surprise was that the kid now sleeps through the night, waking at 5 or 6 instead of 1 or 2. Uninterrupted sleep...how I've missed you.

SO cute! I would have loved to have a room like this as a child. The tree makes me just want to pick up a book and read under it. You and your husband are very talented!

So adorable! I had contemplated chalkboard paint on the lower half of my son's bedroom walls -and then thought "how am I going to teach him NOT to write on other walls then..." and decided against it. Love how it looks though - in magazines! The playhouse is inspired - your hubby ROCKS!

So AWESOME! I LOVE that tree and I LOVE that little house! You and your hubby are quite a team! We do a lot of remodeling, too, so I know just how you feel. Our house is always torn up somewhere. Our basement has concrete floors, wallpaper stripped off 3 out of 4 walls, no ceiling (we tore it down). We won't get it finished for a while, so we put the couches in and the TV and we just live in it. Gotta finish the upstairs first! haha! Oh, the feeling of a completed project. I'd like to feel that. Every room upstairs is somewhere between 50 and 90% completed!

I love the room with the sweet little playhouse. (I sometimes used a closet for a playhouse, but it was filled with clothes! ;)
And I also love the sweet houses quilt.

It is really wonderful to have one's own space. I'd love to relive part of my childhood in that nook.

Very cute. My daughter just started sleeping through the night as well. I never realized that two years of very little sleep could take such a toll. I'm sure I'll take another year to fully recover... assuming she continues to sleep.

So you took her out of your hallway nook and put her under a tree. It is wonderful. Well done, Mom & Dad.

Oh yes, two sounds exactly when we finished up DD's room and got finished up co-sleeping (after all she weaned herself at 25 months little snot). Now we have the rule, if the sun is up you can snuggle in mom and dad's bed and if it's not, back to your own bed you go (and only one escort back to bed per night). Must work because she's five now and I'm still enjoying having only my DH in my bed.

Love the little house your DH built! That will save you tons of space!
