Reference and Inspiration: the Wild Quilting Oopsie

Recently I went to teach a free-motion quilting class here in Portland at Modern Domestic. I got everything ready, stacked on my table. I grabbed my teaching bag. I left early so I would have plenty of time to set up...but when I got to class I realized all my quilted samples were.... back home on the table. That's the first time I've done that, so embarrassing! We still had a great class but I promised my students I would post photos on the blog of the samples I meant to bring, to be reference and inspiration.

So here we go, reference and inspiration for everyone!! These samples are from my class Wild Quilting which I also teach on Craftsy.

First up: Divide and Conquer. You divide up the space and then quilt in between the divisions. So many ways to do this!

Next: Showboats. See how putting dense quilting around less densely quilted motifs makes them pop?

And now, Grouped Designs. Notice how I keep the edges of the different groups from being squared, in favor of more flowing edges

And now, how about Layered Designs? Each layer builds up or down from the previous one.

Now think about Blends, different "recipes" for designs repeated over and over.

And what's so fun about these techniques is you can switch between them at any time, as you can see on these fusion samples!

Wild Quilting is fun and if you're wondering if you can do quilting like this the answer is YES you can! If you want to see me quilting these designs check out my class on Craftsy. I hope this has given you ideas for quilting you'd like to try. Happy stitching!

Thanks Christina! I follow your blog and love your FMQ tips. I will come back to this post for inspiration. I had Wild Quilting in my basket on Craftsy and was happy to see the link for 1/3 off. But when I followed it, Craftsy says it has expired. ?

These are great, Christina! I watched your class and loved every minute of it, and appreciate the visual reminders until I can afford to purchase the class for myself.

I have the Wild Quilting class as well as some of your others. Seeing these samples makes me want to go sit and quilt - but tonite is opening night so I need to rest and study the script.

These are so creative and beautiful. I guess when you have this skill and are as creative as you are, the sky's the limit on what you can do with FMQ. I still can't believe you do this on a home sewing machine!!! Thanks for generously sharing your gifts with us!

Oh my! I completely relate to your "horror" at discovering you'd forgotten your samples. Yikes! I teach FMQ too, but so far have remembered the samples... but I always manage to forget something! Quilting gloves, FMQ foot, thread. That's what happens when one is an instructor and doesn't have dedicated supplies "just for teaching." However, your mistake is our win! Once again, it's great seeing what you do. Thank you for sharing!

Well now the people that took your class have a permanent reference in these pictures, and so do we! Your quilting is amazing.

I have all your Craftsy classes and books and they are my favorites. I refer to them all the time for ideas. Any chance you might do a 3rd book on Wild Quilting with examples like these and more from your class? Thank you for your inspiration.
