Or in a line like beads on a string.
Spirals can be tight or loose.
You can square them off.
You can smoosh them into a "topographic" spiral.
You can alternate them with other graphic elements, or alternate the spiral direction.
Or play with the size
You can fill in the spiral path
You could even decorate the spiral itself, there are so many options!

These always looked so hard to me. Especially to be consistent.
I do have trouble with these, maybe i should put them on my designs first?!
they look lovely and you make it seem SO EASY - practice, practice, practice.... I am fine if I draw the design first with wash out pen - it is the 'free' part that i struggle with....

spirals are easy for me, they just seem to flow out. I will have to try some of the variations.

I just did a large quilt with FMQ, and used spirals on a lot of it. I found them to be easy once I just relaxed, they fill large spaces quickly, and it's easy to change directions to move around while filling in the blanks! I can't wait to try some of your variations....
Those look great... I think I may try some on my test fabric. Not sure about FMQ on my current project! Its basted and ready for stitching, but its my largest project ever, so worried about FMQ it... I do have a panel quilt in my stash that I might get out...
Spirals are one of the few fmq I feel I can do - lol!
