A quilt along and a GIVEAWAY!

Does the world need another quilt along? I say YES.

Have you noticed that most quilt alongs assemble a quilt top over several weeks and then address the quilting briefly at the end? I have, and I want to do the exact opposite! I want to briefly assemble a top and then walk you through quilting it, with patterns that are interesting to you.

There seem to be lots of quilters who want to practice free motion quilting - but not on a quilt top they've worked hard on. This quilt along gives you a quilt you don't have to worry about ruining - you could even make it out of fabric that you hate if you want. Or, if you don't want to assemble the top, that's fine too. You can just quilt along with scraps.

If you've never free motion quilted before, I'm going to show you how. If you're stuck in a meandering rut, I'm gonna help you break free. If you're already free motioning your little heart out I might at least give you a few new designs to try. I'm no expert, but I've had some success teaching other quilters to free motion quilt and I want to spread the good news far and wide: you can do it! On your home machine! It's not magic. (But it does feel magical!)

So to generate a little interest in this thing and to start some lucky quilter off on the right foot, I've got a little free motion prize package to give away. The lucky winner will receive:

  • Craft size Warm and Natural packaged batting (perfect size for this project!)
  • 50 curved Dritz quilt basting pins
  • Fons and Porter grippy gloves
  • A package of Schmetz size 90/14 quilting needles
  • One spool of YLI machine quilting thread in white

Since the giveaway is an unabashed attempt to publicize the quilt along, you have three ways to enter. You should leave a separate comment for each entry.

1 - leave a comment on this post telling me something you hope we cover in the quilt along.
2 - become a follower of this blog
3 - blog about the giveaway or quilt along and leave the URL to your post below

The giveaway will be open through August 21st. Good luck and stay tuned! If you'd like a button for the quilt along, here it is (for some reason this looks fine on my home screen and sideways everywhere else. I'll do my best to fix it!):

I was trying to think of what exactly I hoped you would cover...and I don't know ANYTHING....so I pretty much need help with it all. I don't know yet if I'm brave enough to try a quilt along...but I'm going to seriously consider it. :) It might just be the help I need.

Thus far I've only quilted with my walking foot. I would like to learn how to free motion quilt and I was even thinking of taking a class. I enjoyed the samples that you showed above and hope that you show how you did those, as well as some basic information.

Hooolitas... Hi Cristina, I'm Daphne and my English is not very good, I live in Colombia, but by Dory, I heard about your idea and did not want to stay outside, so here I am willing to learn from scratch, because I know nothing of free mulch, but fabric, thread and needle are my passions ...

A hug and tell you right now I run a blog for my friends who decide to participate

I hope everything is well written because I use google translator + Ü +
..........................................

I need instructions on different ways to mark quilting designs -- so far I just use a pencil or chalk and am terrible at calculating repeats, etc.

Marie said...

I am now a follower of this great blog. I am so excited. I needed an impetus to finally practice free motion quilting. I took two classes but don't have the self confidence to just practice.

Marie said...

I hope we just get lots of practice which will build confidence.

Thank you so much for this wonderful quilt along! I love it! I'm new to FMQ -- well to any machine quilting as I've always just taken my quilts to the machine quilter -- and am excited to learn. Something I hope we cover? Hard to say as the whole subject is so broad and I have so much to learn. What I really want, I suppose, is something you already mentioned . . . how to get brave and do FMQ on a quilt you've worked a long time on. I see a design I like, practice a bit at it before I start a quilt and when it looks craptastic, I go back to tried and true methods (stitch in the ditch or straight line quilting). This is going to be awesome for me!

Wow, what a great idea! Count me in - I've been doing FMQ for about four months now, but it's been hit and miss as I learn as I go. It'll be nice to have someone with experience show me how! I'd like especially to learn how to do feathers - they look so great!!

Oh how I wish I wasn't too late to enter! I am a new quilter and have never done this before. I am in the 'nesting' phase of my first pregnancy and everything is going towards quilting. I hope we cover just doing fun stitches and that I get some good practice out of this. THANKS!

PS: already a blog follower. ;)

Wendi said...

Can't wait to get started. I have been a quilter for too many years to count, but have never been able to "get" free motion quilting. I always have tension problems, I blame my machine, but its probably user error.
