Free Motion Quilting Designs: Inspired by Fabric

As a free motion quilter, you can stitch whatever you'd like. That freedom is wonderful, but it can also be paralyzing. Where do you start?

One of my favorite places to look for inspiration is right under my nose - at my fabric. Following are some examples of fabrics I pulled from my stash and quilting designs I stitched inspired by those fabrics.

I hope this encourages you to look around your stash and sketch some ideas to stitch. Like we need any more reasons to sit around and pet our fabric!

See more Free Motion Quilting designs and tips on the Free Motion Quilting page.

Thanks for this post. Those are great ideas we can all glean for ideas. I remember someone also saying they sometimes quilt the quilt from behind if the backing fabric has a neat design that can be 'traced' for an over all design as well.

Love this! I just posted about how I learned some feathers and fillers. I can't wait to try some of these designs too. Thanks.

I've heard of stitching on the design for practice but this takes it one step further. Very clever!

You really do make it look easy. And you have just demonstrated a great artistic principle. Size variation. You can take a small design and repeat it in a larger size and a different color to really make a design resonate. It hink my art teacher called it repetition with variation.

I know I have to practice some more, so thank you for giving me the encouragement. I think I should make it my New Year's resolution.

Now that's clever quilting! I actually have a piece of the black and white but I never thought of it as a quilting pattern.

What a great idea! Since I just started (2 small pot holders) I was thinking of sewing on the printed design to practice with a little more control. Mine's all over the place. Thanks for this idea.
