Hilarious! I like 'fourtwoseven' comment leading to straight line quilting! It is always the fallen back on method. I'm contemplating quilting a quilt at the moment - free motion or straight? it is a dilemma!
Decide to free motion quilt. Realize your machine came with a darning foot. Make sloppy stitches, cuss try meandering, oops crossed some lines, fuss Say "well who gives a ***bleeep*** bind the quilt and smile, Call it a creative choice.
One of my quilts ended up with the swearing stuff on it but quite by accident. Wish I had thought to add a little star or two. Your directions are humorous but quite the truth!
Clever! Somewhere in there, along the same lines as Gene's, is the decision to call one's attempts "organic." Years ago when I took glassblowing classes, a failed functional piece could be manhandled into a vague shape and thus become "sculpture!"
Humorus and encouraging at the same time...thanks! I'm still struggling, but your QAL has helped me tremendously and my confidence is improving bit by bit.
This has been really fun, and Ive learned so much!! But still my lines are not straight and my patterns get a bit wonky, but I have decided that maybe my style :o)
So funny! It just takes practice and perseverance, but sometimes we just don't have enough time for that.... My new favorite friend is "organic" straight line quilting - lovely wavy lines!! But I still love FMQ.....
This is hilarious. And true. And I so so so love your relaxed approach to FMQ that makes it not only seem, but actually BE an attainable skill! I know I will be referring to your series of posts for a l-o-n-g time to come.
I would have to add the "random temper tantrum "I am not ripping this out!!" pile of "used to be pretty quilt" in the corner" step to my timeline! Thanks for the inspiration!
THEN - Decide to quilt. Find darning foot - it's gotta be here somewhere! Problems - swearing. Wobbly stitching. Give up and add to UFO pile.
NOW - Decide to quilt. Find darning foot - it's gotta be here somewhere! Problems - swearing. Wobbly stitching. Finish anyway - practice makes perfect. Give to grandchild with label - "Grandma Loves Me". (They couldn't care less about the stitching.) Decide to quilt another one.
Your drawings remind me of learning the computer skills..I went through all those phases but learned so I know I will succeed at FMQ and it is not near has hard. Thanks for all your inspirations along the way. samhashouse@yahoo.com
Your drawings and these comments totally cracked me up.
And I can't add anything because up to this point I totally know where my free motion foot it, and I still send it off to someone else to do the quilting.
Very funny! I am amazed at the new words I have added to my vocabulary since I started (trying to)FMQ. I try to think of it as a work in prgress, and forge onward...
This made me laugh! I sincerely have a desire to free motion quilt my own quilts, but am feeling a little intimidated...I'm a perfectionist with my quilting, so I'm sure that's what's holding me up with FMQ. Practice makes perfect, right? Or is it practice makes competentcy?
I'm glad I stumbled on your blog today - it's going on my favorite places for lots and lots of future reference! Thnaks for all the blogs on FMQ.

I always figure the non-quilters I give my quilts to will love them no matter what the stitching looks like (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)
Good one! I'm still at the swearing stage and wishing for that fairy godmother!

This is awesome. You are great.
Isn't it funny how we have these great ideas in our head, but the reality is............ PRACTICE!!

Too funny but oh, so true! Thanks! I've stalled in my attempts at FMQ. Maybe I'll try again this weekend now.

Thank YOU !
So true!!! I'm up to the big scribbly stage.. I've just got to remember- practice, practice, practice!!
I've got the darning foot - just waiting for the fairy godmother to show up. It has taken me this long I figure I can wait, and take the first route.
very true!!
i got my darning foot months ago, but i only use it once.. need more & more practice then!.. tq for sharing.. :)
Just remember the mantra: Finished is better than perfect.
